Oligarchs & patriarchs
I am always coming up against my deep resentment about and resistance to the plain fact that we are still ruled by a few, mostly cis-gendered, straight white males.
A capitalist, patriarchal (generally misogynist) global oligarchy.
Girls may run the world, but men are still getting most of the credit and profits.
I often joke about it offhandedly, even reflexively. Like, “why are women reverting to corsets?” - because, the capitalist patriarchy.
But I mean it. And it really does piss me off.
Look, I am surrounded by and love many wonderful, feminist men. I’m married to one. I was raised by one. I’m friends with a whole bunch.
But it still really gets to me. Pretty much all the time.
So it does make a small corner of my heart sing to see the sudden flare up of outrage against Russian oligarchs at the start of the Ukraine war.
But why stop there? Why not extend this newfound rage towards oligarchs to the UK, Saudi Arabia, China - America?
According to the Daily Maverick, “Russia’s wealthiest 0.01% (the top 1% of the top 1%) have taken about half their wealth, around $200 billion, out of Russia and stashed it in the UK and other havens. At the same time, the US’s wealthiest 0.01% have taken about $1.2 trillion out of the US, principally to avoid paying taxes. So, in terms of magnitude, US plutocrats match every dollar that Russian plutocrats stash abroad to escape scrutiny with $10 of their own.”
And it’s not like British and American billionaires can take the moral high ground here. I haven’t seen them say or do much about, for example, one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises in Yemen, or the killing of journalists like Jamal Khashoggi.
So, while we are holding on to our shock and indignation at the plight of Ukrainian refugees (which, let’s not forget contains its own hypocrisy when compared with the reaction to Syrians, Iraqis and so many others), can we also turn some of that energy to the oligarchs still running the show at a global level?
